Overview

The Gertrude Hotel reimagines the golden age of disco for the exhuberant queer community of Melbourne's inner northern suburbs. They have a heavy social media presence that they use to promote special events and club nights, ongoing theme nights, as well as a rotating roster of food and drink specials.

Having already built a strong social media presence, they required a fully seamless marketing strategy to retain their followers, garner new ones, and remain relevant. As it stood, their business lacked a clear brand narrative and visual identity, and they were starting to fall behind their competitors.

To assist with their relaunch, I defined their brand strategy, developed a compelling visual identity that reflected the aesthetic and attitude of the venue, and produced a series of print and digital marketing materials with which to re-engage their target audience.

Leading typography was selected with follower engagement front of mind, with each themed night identified with its own display font, coupled with complimenting graphic image use to reflect the mood and atmosphere of each particular night.

Through the bold application of texture, gradients and secondary type treatments, the brands visual identity observes a retro-modern take on 70s glam-rock and disco-funk, while keeping true to the venues core values of inclusion, variety and outspoken pride.
