Overview

In Organised Chance, 313RGB and Wayne Smith explore the creative potential of using design systems that embrace randomisation. Through a series of interviews, visual essays, and analytical studies, they address the learnings from Open_Collab: Global/Local, a collaborative workshop held in Melbourne during early 2020.

My role as design assistant placed me in direct interaction with the “ghost in the machine”, the simple, code-based AI at the heart of the project’s design system; countless variations combining, arranging and overlaying imagery and graphic assets that through chance and curation arrive at a narrative depicting the course of the days workshop.

Each edition of Organised Chance is completely unique. Combining a generative layout system with variable printing techniques, this publication is an experiment in designer/algorithm collaboration.

In 2020, I attended a design workshop for Melbourne Design Week in which attendees and industry professionals collaborated, responding to the theme of ‘Global/ Local’. The workshop focused on ‘Creative Play’ utilising random image-making processes that provoke unexpected juxtapositions and chance encounters.
